Building for it
A project is made for one toolchain, picked when you start it. For this board you can use three of the four:
| Toolchain | |
|---|---|
| Arduino (C++) | Every board, every widget and every peripheral here. The most control, and the most to set up. Start a project |
| MicroPython | Change a screen by editing a file on the board. No compiler once it is flashed. Start a project |
| ESPHome | ESPHome has no driver for this controller. |
| ESP-IDF (C) | Espressif's own framework: esp_lcd, the component registry and idf.py, with nothing of Arduino in it. Start a project |
At a glance
| Part | Detail |
|---|---|
| Maker | Waveshare |
| MCU | ESP32-S3 Xtensa LX7 dual-core @ 240 MHz, 512 KB SRAM (+ 2-16 MB PSRAM on most modules) |
| Display | Sinowealth SH8601, 466 x 466 px, QSPI (quad SPI), 16-bit colour |
| Touch | FocalTech FT3168 / FT6146 (capacitive, I2C) |
| Backlight | None: the panel is its own light, dimmed by a command |
| Memory | 16 MB flash, 8 MB octal PSRAM (N16R8) |
| Graphics library | GFX Library for Arduino |
Display pins
SH8601 on QSPI (quad SPI): QSPI clock 40 MHz, host SPI2_HOST, RGB colour order, inversion off.
| Signal | Pin |
|---|---|
| SCK | GPIO 10 |
| D0 - D3 | GPIO 11, 12, 13, 14 |
| CS | GPIO 9 |
| RESET | GPIO 21 |
Touch pins
FT3168 / FT6146: I2C address 0x38, 400 kHz, shares the display bus.
| Signal | Pin |
|---|---|
| SDA | GPIO 47 |
| SCL | GPIO 48 |
| RESET | not connected |
Also on the board
- I2C (GPIO 47 / 48) - SDA GPIO 47, SCL GPIO 48
- SPI (TF card) - SCK GPIO 41, MOSI GPIO 39, MISO GPIO 40
- IMU - QMI8658, at 0x6B, on I2C (GPIO 47 / 48)
- RTC - PCF85063, at 0x51, on I2C (GPIO 47 / 48)
- SDCard - SD card, on SPI (TF card), CS GPIO 38
- GPIO 42 is set high at boot - OLED_EN panel enable - set by the factory program only
- Battery - analog input on GPIO 4
- BOOTButton - input on GPIO 0
The preset adds these to the Hardware tab with the board, so a sensor can go straight onto the connector.
Check your revision. Pins from Waveshare's demo code and schematic (https://files.waveshare.com/wiki/ESP32-S3-Touch-AMOLED-1.43/ESP32-S3-AMOLED-1.43-Demo-V3.zip). Sold with one of two panels under the same part number. This is the SH8601 one (its id register 0xDA reads 0x86); if the picture sits 6 columns to the left, choose the CO5300 preset. Every pin recorded agrees between the vendor's code and the schematic's GPIO table (QSPI 9/10/11-14, RST 21, OLED_EN 42, I2C 47/48, SD 38-41, BAT_ADC 4, BOOT 0). Brightness is a command to the panel, not a backlight pin. Compiled; not run on a board here.
Designing for it in LCD Wizard
- Choose Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-AMOLED-1.43 (SH8601 panel) on the Hardware tab (or use the button above) and every pin on this page is filled in. The export writes the sketch,
lcd_pins.h, the GFX Library for Arduino configuration,lv_conf.handplatformio.ini- a project that builds for this board as it comes. - The FT3168 / FT6146 is capacitive and needs no calibration. The firmware resets it and checks it answers on every boot.
- The panel has no backlight pin: it is its own light, and its brightness is a command. Give a slider or a button a Set backlight action and it dims as a backlight would.
- With PSRAM the LVGL memory pool can live there, leaving internal RAM for everything else.
- Screens are designed for 466 x 466 px in either orientation, with LVGL 9 or LVGL 8.
The parts
SH8601. AMOLED controller with per-panel brightness commands instead of a backlight pin. Waveshare's first 1.8" boards.
FT3168 / FT6146. Waveshare's AMOLED boards (1.43", 1.64", 1.8", 1.91", 2.06").
ESP32-S3. The only common Arduino target with a hardware RGB565 LCD peripheral. PSRAM is effectively required for RGB panels.
GFX Library for Arduino. Moshi Liu's library. Best QSPI/AMOLED and RGB coverage. Configured in code.
The pinout on one page
Every pin above, laid out to print and keep beside the bench. Generated from this preset, so it says exactly what the designer writes into lcd_pins.h.

The same pins as data - board.json and pins.csv - are in the open pinout dataset on GitHub, free to reuse under CC BY 4.0.
