Waveshare ESP32-S3-Knob-Touch-LCD-1.8
1.8" 360x360 round IPS LCD (ST77916, QSPI), CST816D touch, PCM5100A speaker, TF card, battery sense.
Building for it
A project is made for one toolchain, picked when you start it. All four can drive this board:
| Toolchain | |
|---|---|
| Arduino (C++) | Every board, every widget and every peripheral here. The most control, and the most to set up. Start a project |
| MicroPython | Change a screen by editing a file on the board. No compiler once it is flashed. Start a project |
| ESPHome | No compiler to install, and the panel can join Home Assistant as real entities. Start a project |
| ESP-IDF (C) | Espressif's own framework: esp_lcd, the component registry and idf.py, with nothing of Arduino in it. Start a project |
At a glance
| Part | Detail |

| Display | Sitronix ST77916, 360 x 360 px, QSPI (quad SPI), 16-bit colour |
| Touch | Hynitron CST816S (capacitive, I2C) |
| Backlight | GPIO 47, dimmable (PWM) |
| Memory | 16 MB flash, 8 MB octal PSRAM (N16R8) |
| Graphics library | GFX Library for Arduino |
Display pins
ST77916 on QSPI (quad SPI): QSPI clock 40 MHz, host SPI2_HOST, RGB colour order, inversion on.
| Signal | Pin |
|---|---|
| SCK | GPIO 13 |
| D0 - D3 | GPIO 15, 16, 17, 18 |
| CS | GPIO 14 |
| RESET | GPIO 21 |
| Backlight | GPIO 47 |
Touch pins
CST816S: I2C address 0x15, 300 kHz.
| Signal | Pin |
|---|---|
| SDA | GPIO 11 |
| SCL | GPIO 12 |
| RESET | not connected |
Also on the board
- SDCard - SD card, CLK GPIO 4, CMD GPIO 3, D0 GPIO 5, D1 GPIO 6, D2 GPIO 42, D3 GPIO 2
- Battery - analog input on GPIO 1
- BOOTButton - input on GPIO 0
The preset adds these to the Hardware tab with the board, so a sensor can go straight onto the connector.
Check your revision. Pins, panel start-up, backlight, touch and knob from Waveshare's own demo (https://files.waveshare.com/wiki/ESP32-S3-Knob-Touch-LCD-1.8/ESP32-S3-Knob-Touch-LCD-1.8-Demo.zip), each checked on its schematic. The panel is started with Waveshare's own ST77916 register load (Hardware > Display, Panel init sequence) at 40 MHz. The knob (Hardware > Inputs) is a two-way switch, not a quadrature encoder: a click is a pulse on GPIO 8 (clockwise) or GPIO 7 (anticlockwise), read every 3 ms as Waveshare reads it; it has no push switch, so Encoder pressed has nothing to listen to on this board. Touch is polled at 300 kHz with its reset (GPIO 10) and interrupt (GPIO 9) left alone, as Waveshare's demo leaves them. On the board and not in this preset: the DRV2605 vibration motor (no driver); the PDM microphone (the app reads I2S microphones only); the second chip (an ESP32-U4WDH) and its own knob. The headphone DAC is carried as Waveshare's audio demo drives it (I2S 39/40/41), but its mute line and its input switch are the second chip's, so the S3 is heard only while that chip leaves the DAC to it. The ESPHome export does not send Waveshare's panel load, so it is refused. Compiled; not run on a board here.
Designing for it in LCD Wizard
- Choose Waveshare ESP32-S3-Knob-Touch-LCD-1.8 on the Hardware tab (or use the button above) and every pin on this page is filled in. The export writes the sketch,
lcd_pins.h, the GFX Library for Arduino configuration,lv_conf.handplatformio.ini- a project that builds for this board as it comes. - The CST816S is capacitive and needs no calibration. The firmware resets it and checks it answers on every boot.
- The backlight is dimmable: give a slider or a button a Set backlight action.
- With PSRAM the LVGL memory pool can live there, leaving internal RAM for everything else.
- Screens are designed for 360 x 360 px in either orientation, with LVGL 9 or LVGL 8.
The parts
ST77916. Round QSPI panel found on 1.8"-2.1" ESP32-S3 boards.
CST816S. Single touch plus gestures. Standard on 1.28" round GC9A01 modules. Needs RST wired.
ESP32-S3. The only common Arduino target with a hardware RGB565 LCD peripheral. PSRAM is effectively required for RGB panels.
GFX Library for Arduino. Moshi Liu's library. Best QSPI/AMOLED and RGB coverage. Configured in code.
The pinout on one page
Every pin above, laid out to print and keep beside the bench. Generated from this preset, so it says exactly what the designer writes into lcd_pins.h.

The same pins as data - board.json and pins.csv - are in the open pinout dataset on GitHub, free to reuse under CC BY 4.0.
