Building for it
A project is made for one toolchain, picked when you start it. For this board you can use three of the four:
| Toolchain | |
|---|---|
| Arduino (C++) | Every board, every widget and every peripheral here. The most control, and the most to set up. Start a project |
| MicroPython | Change a screen by editing a file on the board. No compiler once it is flashed. Start a project |
| ESPHome | ESPHome ships the RM690B0, which is a different controller. |
| ESP-IDF (C) | Espressif's own framework: esp_lcd, the component registry and idf.py, with nothing of Arduino in it. Start a project |
At a glance
| Part | Detail |
|---|---|
| Maker | Waveshare |
| MCU | ESP32-S3 Xtensa LX7 dual-core @ 240 MHz, 512 KB SRAM (+ 2-16 MB PSRAM on most modules) |
| Display | Raydium RM67162, 240 x 536 px, QSPI (quad SPI), 16-bit colour |
| Touch | FocalTech FT3168 / FT6146 (capacitive, I2C) |
| Backlight | None: the panel is its own light, dimmed by a command |
| Memory | 16 MB flash, 8 MB octal PSRAM (N16R8) |
| Graphics library | GFX Library for Arduino |
Display pins
RM67162 on QSPI (quad SPI): QSPI clock 40 MHz, host SPI2_HOST, RGB colour order, inversion off.
| Signal | Pin |
|---|---|
| SCK | GPIO 47 |
| D0 - D3 | GPIO 18, 7, 48, 5 |
| CS | GPIO 6 |
| RESET | GPIO 17 |
Touch pins
FT3168 / FT6146: I2C address 0x38, 400 kHz, shares the display bus.
| Signal | Pin |
|---|---|
| SDA | GPIO 40 |
| SCL | GPIO 39 |
| INT / IRQ | GPIO 41 |
| RESET | not connected |
Also on the board
- I2C (GPIO 40 / 39) - SDA GPIO 40, SCL GPIO 39
- IMU - QMI8658, at 0x6B, on I2C (GPIO 40 / 39)
- Battery - analog input on GPIO 1
- BOOTButton - input on GPIO 0
The preset adds these to the Hardware tab with the board, so a sensor can go straight onto the connector.
Check your revision. Pins from Waveshare's demo code and schematic (https://github.com/waveshareteam/ESP32-S3-AMOLED-1.91). 1) TF card: no conflict on this revision - the schematic and the code's V1 branch agree (SPI, SCK 47, MOSI 42, MISO 8, CS 9). The code's DEFAULT is the other board (VersionControl_V2: SDMMC, CLK 9, CMD 42, D0 8), so the vendor's examples as downloaded do not mount a card on a V1 board until that macro is commented out. The glass has rounded corners whose radius Waveshare does not give, so the designer draws them square: keep what matters out of the corners, or set a corner radius on the Display tab once it is measured. On the board and not in this preset: TF card: it is wired onto the panel's own SPI lines, which the export gives to the panel alone. Brightness is a command to the panel, not a backlight pin. Compiled; not run on a board here.
Designing for it in LCD Wizard
- Choose Waveshare ESP32-S3-AMOLED-1.91 / ESP32-S3-Touch-AMOLED-1.91 (V1 board) on the Hardware tab (or use the button above) and every pin on this page is filled in. The export writes the sketch,
lcd_pins.h, the GFX Library for Arduino configuration,lv_conf.handplatformio.ini- a project that builds for this board as it comes. - The FT3168 / FT6146 is capacitive and needs no calibration. The firmware resets it and checks it answers on every boot.
- The panel has no backlight pin: it is its own light, and its brightness is a command. Give a slider or a button a Set backlight action and it dims as a backlight would.
- With PSRAM the LVGL memory pool can live there, leaving internal RAM for everything else.
- Screens are designed for 240 x 536 px in either orientation, with LVGL 9 or LVGL 8.
The parts
RM67162. LilyGO T-Display-S3 AMOLED and Waveshare's 1.91" boards.
FT3168 / FT6146. Waveshare's AMOLED boards (1.43", 1.64", 1.8", 1.91", 2.06").
ESP32-S3. The only common Arduino target with a hardware RGB565 LCD peripheral. PSRAM is effectively required for RGB panels.
GFX Library for Arduino. Moshi Liu's library. Best QSPI/AMOLED and RGB coverage. Configured in code.
The pinout on one page
Every pin above, laid out to print and keep beside the bench. Generated from this preset, so it says exactly what the designer writes into lcd_pins.h.
