Bertie the Wizard: an AI voice assistant with a face
by jonathan harrocks
A tribute to Bertie, a helper on the way to perfection.
Bertie the Wizard is an AI voice assistant with a face, for the LCDWIKI ES3C35P (ESP32-S3, 3.5" 320 x 480, with its own microphone and speaker).
Say "Hi ESP", or press Talk to me, and ask him anything. He wakes up, listens, thinks and answers out loud through the board's speaker, and his face follows along: a wake-up, a listening look with sound bars in his glasses, a scan line while he thinks, and his beard moving only while his voice is actually playing.
The wizard is a Sprite cut from one spritesheet with five moods, and the AI Assistant drives it through the "AI Assistant stage" trigger. No code of your own anywhere.
The Wi-Fi button slides to a page with a QR code: scan it with your phone, join "LCD-Wizard", and pick your Wi-Fi on the page that opens, which is in Bertie's own colours.
Before you build it, put your own API key in the AI Assistant (an OpenAI key, or any service that speaks the OpenAI API). The gallery copy carries no key. Build it with PlatformIO: with the wake word it is 4.2 MB, more than the Arduino IDE allows for speech.
The mascot was drawn by Bertie (Ecothrive) and animated into the spritesheet. It runs on a real ES3C35P: it hears "Hi ESP", asks, and speaks the answer. The AI Assistant, the Sprite, the QR code and the Wi-Fi page's own look are part of Pro.

Notes from the author
Say "Hi ESP" or press Talk to me, ask a question, and Bertie listens, thinks and answers out loud, with his face following along. For the LCDWIKI ES3C35P.
Using it
Open a copy in the designer and it is yours to edit: restyle the screens, move it to another board, and export the Arduino (C++) project. Designing is free, and a copy needs no account. Open the designer.
