Blocky Pixel-art Radio for the Cheap Yellow Display

by jonathan harrocks

An internet radio for the original Cheap Yellow Display (the Sunton ESP32-2432S028R), drawn in chunky pixel art like an item window from a blocky building game. The disc in the big slot shows while a station plays, and the purple tooltip names the station, its genre and the track. Five hearts are the volume. Slide a finger along them, or press VOL - and +. The green bar is the sound level. Under it are play, previous and next, and a Wi-Fi slot that opens the screen for setting up Wi-Fi. Along the bottom, eight coloured discs are eight stations, and the one playing has a white frame. Wi-Fi is set up from a phone, so the board never needs a keyboard. It plays through the board's own speaker connector. A version that played to a Bluetooth speaker was made too, and on a real CYD it ran out of memory, because Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Classic together need more than a classic ESP32 without PSRAM has. Playing to a Bluetooth speaker needs a classic ESP32 with PSRAM, a WROVER module. Every picture is ordinary artwork with widgets over it, so every part can be found and changed in the designer. Nothing in it is part of Pro. It is free to open, change, and generate. The step-by-step tutorial that builds it from an empty designer is at https://lcdwizard.com/docs/tutorial-blocky-radio. A ready-made image to flash is coming soon. It is an Arduino export for the ESP32. It has been compiled for the board, and it has not yet run on one.

About this design

Blocky Pixel-art Radio for the Cheap Yellow Display is an LVGL interface for the ESP32-2432S028R "Cheap Yellow Display" (ILI9341 320 x 240, XPT2046 touch), with 3 screens and 58 widgets, made for Arduino (C++) on LVGL 9.

Notes from the author

An internet radio drawn like a game's item window, for the original ESP32-2432S028R. It plays through the board's own speaker connector, and Wi-Fi is set up from a phone. Free to build, with a step-by-step tutorial.

Using it

Open a copy in the designer and it is yours to edit: restyle the screens, move it to another board, and export the Arduino (C++) project. Designing is free, and a copy needs no account. Open the designer.
